Dreamfall Chapters reaches $85,000 goal

Time To Celebrate!!!!!!

While it was clear it was going to happen from the early days, its still amazing to see Dreamfall Chapters reach its funding goal on Kickstarter.

Congratulations to Ragnar Tørnquist and his team at Redthread Games and congratulations and thanks to everyone who’s backed this project. This is a true demonstration of the many people that have much love for the Longest Journey story and are willing to put their hands in their pockets to enable us all to continue the journey.

So the game we’ve been dreaming of and hoping for over the last 6 years is defiantly going ahead, and now we are shooting for as many stretch goals as possible. Stretch goals are commitments the developers make at various landmark points above the original target.

Its already clear that 900k will be achieved, and so we’ll get Mac and Linux versions of the game which will please many and be the first game in the series to offer an official version for these platforms.

Other than that, two other stretch goals have been revealed with more to come depending on how the fundraising goes:

Here are the first three stretch goals as published on the projects kickstarter page:

  • $900,000 – Apples & Penguins: Mac and Linux versions of Dreamfall Chapters. Pledgers will be able to choose which version of the game they want to download, and to receive on DVD and/or memory stick
  • $950,000 – The Loremaster, which includes the Great Library of Marcuria (rebuilt in secrecy, of course), a fully-voiced librarian character, and tons of books, documents, ancient parchments and tomes of lore in-game for players to read, explore and dig into!
  • $1,000,000 – A Longer Journey, which allows us to create new locations, characters and side stories, adding great depth to the world, additional gameplay and new dialogue, lore, magical creatures…and some cool surprises! Check back later for more information about this stretch goal!

The team also released a video demonstrating very early prototype, in game footage which, frankly looks amazing.

This is going to be a landmark game, and for only $25 up front, you can not only give the project valuable backing, but also secure your own copy of the game when its ready. Its a Win Win, so head over the the projects kickstarter page and show some love.

DreamFall Chapters – Appeal for Kickstarter Investors

DreamFall Chapters, the follow up to the Epic, cinematic award winning adventure games The Longest Journey and DreamFall: The Longest Journey is in pre-production .

This news may mean nothing to many of you, but its news I’ve been hoping to hear for years.

The first two games draw you into a story, in which there are two worlds, Stark and Arcadia. One world of science, one of Magic. The two worlds are divided by the ‘Balance’ and only certain people known as ‘Shifters’ can travel between the two worlds.

I played the first of the two games back in 2000, and since then eagerly awaited the continuation of the story, because this series is all about the deep, immersive story that unfolds over this huge adventure.

Six years later and DreamFall: The longest journey is released and the story continues with an amazing, gorgeous world to explore and plenty of colourful characters to interact with.

The story climaxes with betrayal, blackmail, murder and tragedy with a sinister plot about to come to fruition. April, a main character from the beginning is left bleeding in the sea after being stabbed with a sword before falling off the end of a pier, Zoe, another main character’s physical self is left in a coma with her father watching over her, her spiritual self travels to the ‘story-time’, a place where all stories are told and heard. Zoe asks if she is dead. The story keeper does not know, but it does not matter here.

The first two games were published by ‘Funcom’, however, the series creator Ragnar Tørnquist has founded an independent game development studio, Red Thread Games to produce DreamFall Chapters. This will allow the team to make a “…Proper, mature chalenging adventure game, one without compromises…” Ragnar Tørnquist.

“For years it’s been our dream to tell more stories in The Longest Journey saga, and now we’ve finally brought together the core team behind Dreamfall for this long-awaited sequel” Says Ragnar Tørnquist.

So many questions, so much more to learn, and we are so close, since Ragnar Tørnquist and his team are funding this adventure themselves, they need backing, This is why the project now has its own Kickstarter page so the fans can fund a game they want.

The kick-starter page has a video, telling the story so far with footage and music from the original two games. I have to add here that the ‘DreamFall’ score by Leon Willet is truly amazing, its on my iPod! One of my favourite tracks from it features on the video above so check it out.

There are also links to buy the first two games, still immensely popular. An experience I’d recommend to everyone!

I’ll be watching the funding closely and counting down the days ’til I can resume the journey.

Desperate Money-Grabbers Friends Life Refuse Payout on Critical Illness Policy Because of Unrelated ‘Pins and Needles’

Anyone who follows me on twitter (@stuartfoxmusic) will know I’ve been quite vocal about the finance company, Friends Life and the case of Nic Hughes. Friends Life refused to pay out on a critical illness policy due to a long forgotten case of pins and needles.

Insurance Nightmare: Nic Hughes died aged 44 while still fighting with Friends Life over their refusal to pay out on his critical illness policy

Friends Life, obviously frantically looking for a way out of paying when Nic became terminally ill as I believe they do in all cases, went through all his medical records, even though they had been given full access to them on application. Nic had even encouraged them to access his records since he had suffered with some illness in the past.

Finding nothing relevent to his terminal illness that they didn’t already know about, they did see that, a long time ago, Nic had told the Dr. he’d had pins and needles.

This was a well known side effect of an illness (unrelated to his death) that Nic had already disclosed to Friends Life. Nic had also been advised to cut down on his alcohol intake. This was standard advice and as he was already drinking well below the healthy limits he didn’t dwell on this.

These two irrelevant and historical medical notes were used as a pretext to refuse payout and cancel the policy when Nic became ill. Following this decision, both Nics consultant Dr. and GP condoned the decision.

In a letter from Nic’s Dr. shortly after the decision by Friends Life, he wrote: ‘I wish to state categorically that neither of these two events are related to his current diagnosis. I also wish to stress that 10 or 20 units of alcohol per week are within the Department of Health’s recommendations of safe levels. Again, I do not understand why these two pieces of information have somehow been used to deny him a payment under his Critical Illness Policy.

‘I think it cruel and highly distasteful that that the above two irrelevant details from his medical history have been used as some sort of pretext to deny him a payment on his Critical Illness Policy.’

Nic’s best friend, Kester Brewin started a campaign to try and persuade Friends Life to do the right thing. A petition on change.org currently has over 62,000 signatures and the twitter campaign has attracted celebrity support from Stephen Fry and Miranda Hart among many others. The huge petition was handed to Friends Life, who refused to send any management representative to receive it and still refuse to sit down with Nic’s widow and her twins to discuss the case.

Their PR response to a this major issue has been laughable, @friendslifetalk, once an active twitter feed on the subject of finance related issues simply fell silent and stopped tweeting two months ago when 1000’s of people were using @friendslifetalk and #nicsfight to express their disgust and ask them to at least talk to the family about this.

After complete silence since the 5th of december 2012, they start tweeting on the 5th of Jan, 2013 about pension research. After major social media outcry and coverage in all of the mainstream press, this what they use to break their silence.

This obviously sparked 100’s of responses to their tweets asking, in disgust what they were doing about Nic Hughes. They fall silent once again.

Any marketing and PR training manual can hold this up as a perfect example of how NOT to deal with a social media PR crisis. Their ‘Damage limitation’ is actually increasing the damage to their brand 10 fold as they are showing themselves to be spineless, disorganised bullies.

So why am I so angry at Friends Life? This is testament to how business is done these days. There is no regard for human life, there is no regard for the wellbeing of people, there is no common sense or sense of decency in any business. The same goes for government. Decisions will be made in the full knowledge that those decisions will ruin lives or severely reduce quality of life for affected parties. This is for the greater good (read, greater profit) according to morally bankrupt thieves like Friends Life.

Friends life must not get away with this disgusting behaviour. They could find a detail like this in ANY insurance policy so the truth is, no one is really insured under the current system, especially if you are with Friends Life.
