A Downing Street source has confirmed that UK Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron will consider requiring UK ISPs to block access to pornography websites.

Naive Tory MP, Claire Perry has been leading the campaign to force Internet Service Providers to automatically block adult sites unless the customer chooses to ‘opt in’ to these services. Ironically she last gained notoriety for subjecting her colleagues to a foul mouthed rant in which she described, in graphic detail the sexual services she would perform for house of commons speaker, John Bercow in return for being allowed to speak in the chamber during a debate. The sexual outburst from Perry, former banker and mother of three, lead to a lively ‘blowjobs for questions’ debate.

The Tory stance on this type of issue is very dangerous. The campaigners who would see adult sites blocked are part of the fast increasing group of people who seem to think, ISP’s like broadcasters have absolute control of what is allowed on to our computer screens. This simply is not how the internet works.

This ill thought out campaign is part of the ever increasing mentality among the UK public (fueled by the nanny state government) that everything is someone else’s fault.

Why on earth would a parent give their child unsupervised access to the internet if they had absolutely no understanding of it; the chances are, if the kid is smart he or she will be able to work around any ISP level block anyway. The most determined children will, if left un supervised go where ever they want online, opt in or no.

There are already several ISP’s and third party companies who offer tools to block unsuitable sites and monitor your children’s online activity. Many of these services are a lot more effective than an ISP level block would be, but apparently the great UK unwashed are too lazy to actually play an active interest in the content their kids are exposed to. They don’t want to take the time to fully understand new technology that is, these days a vital part of life and education. Like everything else seems to be in this ‘something for nothing’ nanny state, its all someone else’s problem and they had better sort it out.

Information should be free for everyone to access and parents or guardians should guide children’s exposure to information online.

Every child is different; there are scenes of torture and murder in the Harry Potter series of books, there’s imagery that could potentially disturb and upset some children everywhere from Shakespeare to Meyer and there are a tonne of internet sites that are just as potentially damaging to the wrong eyes, if not more so than those containing adult content.

This site directly contradicts the proven science of evolution taught to children in schools. Creationists believe that things like dinosaur bones (which prove our planet is older than just a few thousand years) were placed by God as a test of faith to us Humans. Some who subscribe to the creationist belief teach children a distorted and invented version of natural science to explain their theory that the earth is, in fact only 6000 years old. Imagine if your child read this information and believed it, it could lead to the questioning of everything taught in school. Yes, I think yahoo answers is potentially more dangerous to kids than porn! Why? Search for ‘how do I give a good blow job’, ‘how do I kill myself’, ‘is it OK to hate blacks’ and a host of other questions and you get explicit, largely moderated replies. You can also ask any question about your own health and receive advice from unqualified strangers. Take the wrong advice seriously and it could cost your life. Who’s fault is it if a chile feels they can’t talk to a parent about health issues? Its not the internet’s fault, but the internet may well pose a danger following the disinterest of a parent in their child’s wellbeing.

Yes, my own site! I express opinions here that may be a little angry and may not be 100% balanced. Its up to the reader to take this into account and accept my rants for what they are, one persons opinion. Its also up to the reader of this blog to take what I have to say on board, along with what other people have to say about said issue, and form their own balanced opinion. Spoon feed a stream of censored, sterilised, government and corporation approved content to kids and adults alike and soon we’ll loose the ability to make our own decisions on opinions offered on line, we’ll just blindly believe them, partly due to the laziness that the Tory ‘Nanny State’ is nurturing.

The danger here is that if you start blocking some content a minority group think may cause harm, you start having to block it all because the next group of ill informed do-gooders will come along and use the adult content block as ammunition to fuel their own campaign against a controversial blogger or a church’s website.

You can’t just demand the government / ISP’s control what your kids are allowed to do online. You have to control what your kids do yourself, after all, you are the parent. Kids will be exposed to things, on line or in real life. They’ll hear and read things that need explaining and putting into context, this is a parents job to do, it is not the job of the government to censor these things in the first place so no parenting has to take place.

In trying to suck up to the lazy, ignorant parents that think that they shouldn’t be responsible for moderating what their children are exposed to, they are allowing the ‘nanny state’ mentality to grow. More and more UK citizens are becoming institutionalized, the result being that we will all soon be unequipped to survive in a free, democratic society.

Gambling and religious sites are more potentially harmful to everyone than adult sites. You can easily obtain translations of writings and teachings that preach the need to murder any nonbelievers of a particular deity (this material can be found in relation to many faiths by the way, not just the one you are thinking about).

There’s a lot of vile and upsetting content online, and these sites are, according to Claire ‘Blow Job’ Perry and David ‘ooh, yes please’ Cameron ok for kids to read, but a pair of naked breasts could corrupt the young forever? Ok lets get a grip people, you Tories have never lived in the real world so stop trying to pretend you understand anything.

Its NOT ok for Kids to watch porn, its not ok at all, but it IS up to parents to control the media that is available to their kids via the Internet, TV, Library, Newsagents… whatever.

Will Blogs that express one persons opinion start to be considered dangerous, will comments on the news of the day be removed because they have the potential to corrupt young minds?

Will the news itself be censored for kids because its too upsetting for them to read or watch?

Where will it end? Lets bare in mind at this point that Syria, Iran and China control online content and broadcasting like this. Are the UK heading in that direction? If so, before we know it our internet will be a government controlled propaganda portal that anyone who dares to exercise freedom of speech will be banned from.

A Much better idea is to encourage ISP’s to provide parents with the tools and education to monitor kids usage and block sites manually that the parent feels may be unsuitable for the individual child.

How are we meant to trust a government that is seemingly so underhand. If there wasn’t some sinister secret adgengenda planned then surely transparency wouldn’t be a problem. Opening up projected risks to public debate could be a very beneficial exercise.

So, is this government trying to hide some dastardly plan? Probably not, they aren’t clever enough but we do know that they are capable of extreme ignorance and disregard for public feeling.

MP’s need to know that we want and require transparency and honesty. This is the only way to rebuild trust and bring about real improvements.

When it didn’t arrive the first receptionist was very helpful and said she’d look into it. The day passes and I ring back at 4PM. The 2nd receptionist becomes abusive and brings up several irrelevant points such as blame for the gas running out in the first place.

We had a difficult week for personal reasons along with the disrupted work / sleep that comes with that - this coincided with the gas running out and yes, it was my fault but this is irrelevant and I never raised the issue of fault - my only issue was that the delivery slot I booked was not kept to. A simple phone call to apologise would have been the end of it, but what happened next was amazing!

After complaining to the email address on the John Staytes website I received the following shocking response.

Dear Mr Fox,
Thank you for your e-mail. Your normal delivery day is a Thursday and you telephoned on Thursday; we are doing very well to deliver the gas on Saturday ( today ). Our records show that you have had only one delivery from ourselves in 2011. Our driver will be with you at about 10 o’clock; it is up to you whether you accept it.

On a more serious note, your attitude to my staff was unacceptable and please direct all future correspondence or phone calls to directly myself. I am a serving Magistrate and will not accept either e-mail or telephone mistruths or tirades.

Such a short reply raises several large concerns:

Lack of interest in evidence:

I offered phone logs and witness statements to prove that I phoned at the times I said I did (Wednesday not Thursday as stated in Mr Stayte’s reply).

He has refused to take these on board or investigate the facts surrounding my complaint to his company. Not a great advertisement for the calibre of people serving as magistrates.

Using status as a magistrate to intimidate

There was no legitimate reason for Mr Stayte to make reference to his status as a magistrate in this context. I can only guess that it was intended as some veiled threat against me taking any further action or complaining about his company again. Not great customer service, also I’m sure the magistrates service wouldn’t approve of him boasting about his position in this way.

Poor English

The guy can’t write! Now, I’m no Joseph Priestley, but when I’m communicating with a client in writing I try to make sure that I’m clear and easy to read / understand. Its worrying that someone who can’t investigate a legitimate complaint and string a simple email together is in a position to pass judgment on others.

He’s said they won’t accept further business

I’m only to speak to him and him alone. This is what the email says. But since I have no direct number for him, and he’s very rarely in the office I won’t be able to do that. Therefore he’s denying me service because I made a complaint!!!!!

On investigating this further, the energy ombudsman service have no power over John Stayte Services at all, despite them being one of the only suppliers of gas for heating in my area. They are frustrated by this, especially since the use of Propane is becoming more widespread with LPG converted vehicles and the like. Currently bottled gas suppliers can treat customers in any way they want and face no repercussions.

And I’m not alone - apparently this man has a habit of abusive behaviour towards customers. Just to a twitter search.

He took $500 from me years ago for advertising on some of his websites. He never posted the advertising and never refunded the money stating that since he had sold the company he didn’t need to. But he refused to provide any details of the people he’d sold the company to.

Do not deal with any of his businesses, especially clean power finance. He is a fly by night operator and not to be trusted.

National Grid first applied to the Forest of Dean Borough council to build this plant. The plant would sit at the end of the controversial Gas Pipe connecting Milford Haven with Tirley, Gloucestershire. The pipe will run at 97bar pressure, something that in several other countries is illegal due to instability and the safety history of similar pipes.

The Forest of Dean Borough council refused the application and it went to appeal. After locals raised over £30,000 (no small feat) to hire legal representation for the enquiry, the Labour secretary of state concluded that the plant was unececery and completely inappropriate, breaking both national and local planning rules.

National Grid then, in an underhand move applied to build the same plant just 400 yards away simply beacause this field fell under a different borough council, Tewkesbury.

EVERY member of Tewkesbury Borough Council’s planning comittee objected. The plans were refused unanimously.  12 Parish councils objected, over 1000 residents objected (remember this is a sparcly populated agricultural area) and 3 MP’s objected. This is not just NIMBYism as has been suggested; although the thought of this plant destroying businesses (noise levels) and rendering it impossable for residents to sell their houses is not a pleasant one for anybody.

There is already a gas plant at nearby Wormington, there is space for the plant there - in fact off the record, Murphy engineers working in Tirley (and drinking in the local pubs) have said that it’s insanity that the plant is not being located Wormington as it makes long term sense.

This is the main reason: extending the pipe line just a few more miles to the existing gas works at Wormington would bypass a bottleneck in the network. Because the pressure of the gas would not need to be lowered to the same extent (the bottleneck would be out of the equation) the plant would only need to be a fraction of the size the Tirley plant will be and therefore would be more efficient and enviromentally friendly.

Sadly, in the short term at least, this option would be more expensive for National Grid, a private company who on one hand report profits of billions during a ressesion and on the other insist they must raise energy prices for the rest of us.

National Gird Appealed once again. This time it was different, there was a new government in power, one that quite publicly values cash flow above human cost. Again, locals were asked to raise over £30,000 for the second time.

Mr Eric Pickles MP, while publicly wanting to “…(introduce) radical new reforms that will mark an end to the hoarding of power within central government and hand control back to individuals, communities and councils” with his localism bill, chose to grant permission to build the gas plant.

The reports in Mr Pickle’s possession detailed all of the above. The reports contained proof that there was a solution to this problem available to National Grid that would have less environmental cost and far less (if any) objection. Why then did he choose to go ahead, especially while shouting about his ‘localism’ bill. Power to local communities and councils when it suits Westminster’s own needs and only then!

I’m trying very hard to think of a scenario in which this course of events would have played out without bribes being involved. Remember - Mr Pickles’ Labour predecessor threw this plan out on the grounds that it was inappropriate, insensitive and unnecessary being that there was a far better solution available that would, in the long term make the supply of gas from this pipe cheaper resulting in lower energy bills (or bigger profit margins). The Conservatives obviously have an interest in protecting National Grid’s short term profits, but why?

The fact that the provision of higher education as it stands is unsustainable ;this must be addressed weather we like it or not. The fact that everyone, regardless of intellect or talent feels its a right to study for a degree means the severe devaluation of a degree in the hands of those who are actually extraordinary. This is a big problem.

Simply raising fees is not the magic wand solution; the problems and social divides this course of action will cause are far greater than any supposed benefits. We should instead look to return higher education to the academically extraordinary and to those whose gifts in their chosen subject areas make them truly stand out. These people will surely graduate and contribute to the national economy many times any investment that was made in them.

I don’t believe any public money at all should be spent facilitating the ‘education’ of the violent chanting brain dead mob shown on the news over the past days.
